Shifts In Society That Should Not Be Ignored.

November 17th, 2009

Over the last few years, there has been a noticable and fundamental shift in how and where people get information. Things have changed and if you’re marketing isn’t changing too, you and  your business will be left behind.

For many businesses, it’s already happening. Here’s the top 11 ways things have changed.

  1. Social Media has fundamentally changed the way people pass the time. Many who used to spend hours watching TV now spend it on Facebook and Twitter.
  2. Communication devices are changing at breakneck speed. Smart phones are taking over, with more and more people are checking Facebook, email, text messages, etc. while waiting in line, etc. Some people are ditching their landlines altogether and strictly using cell phones.
  3. Web 2.0 sites have made the web interactive. Web pages are no longer static. Clients and prospects can interact with your blog, Youtube channel, Facebook fan page, etc.
  4. Bad news can travel fast, and be hard to get rid of. Sites like RipOffReport.com have given unhappy consumers of info products an effective way to “get back”. Twitter can spread negative messages quickly as well. Local businesses are now having to contend with the “new yellow pages” – Google’s local listings – allowing comments from happy AND unhappy customers.
  5. Pre-purchase research on Google and Amazon has become a “way of life” for many prior to purchasing practically anything. Bad or good consumer reviews can instantly make or break the sale.
  6. Local search is fast replacing the Yellow Pages. Soon the only place you’ll see the Yellow Pages will be the Smithsonian.
  7. Email deliverability is going down. And people who used to communicate via email now communicate via Facebook, Twitter & text messages.
  8. An entire generation of pre-teens and teens are coming of age who have learned to communicate ALMOST exclusively via text messaging.
  9. Newspaper and magazine readership continues to plummet.
  10. The Top 1000 Alexa sites are mainly Web 2.0 sites – video sites, blogs, social media, social bookmarking, etc. Businesses that embrace web 2.0 strategies are being ranked higher, faster, leaving their Web 1.0 competition in the dust.;
  11. People are beginning to expect practically ALL websites for businesses to contain video(s).

How does this affect your business?

Are you looking at your marketing strategies to move with this shift in society?

Remember that this does not just effect the Internet Marketing businesses. All offline businesses that have a web presence will also be effected.

Do you think there is a business opportunity there……hmmmm

The Marketing Plan

October 26th, 2009

There are some things that should be avoided when putting together your marketing plan. Keep in mind that a good marketing plan is a collaboration of good strategy and tactics, and you cannot do either one effectively without the other.

In formulating a sound marketing plan here are some things that you should at all cost avoid:

  1. Relying too much on creativity – I am not saying that being creative is wrong, it is actually okay. However as an aspiring entrepreneur you should not rely too much on this aspect. Sometimes when we write our marketing plan we see too much creativity that we tend to overlook tactics which will of course hurt the business in the long run.
  2. Not paying attention to numbers – business in general is all about math and math is about numbers. So in short your marketing plan has something to do with numbers as well as it is part of your business. If you do not know your numbers that well then rest assured the results will not be good. Creating any marketing plan without knowing how much it will cost to acquire your customer, what your average sale needs to be, what is the required profit margin will result to failure. If you are going to invest $500 on advertising alone, how many leads and sales will you have to make in order to cover for the cost of the ad and at the same time profit?
  3. Filling your marketing plan with unnecessary stuff – of course unnecessary stuff will just confuse you, so let it go. Generalities are also qualified as “unnecessary stuff.” Stating that your target market is “everybody” or “adults 50- and above” is not explicit enough and will result to problems down the road. Instead of doing this, start thinking of a niche. Narrow it down to “young males 16-plus who play video games and ride skateboards,” instead of stating “everybody.” While writing your marketing plan, keep in mind that marketing is all about buying your customers. Imagine going into a supermarket and buying everything that your heart desires. The question is, “Can you buy everything you see?” Let us face the harsh reality that, your resources would never allow it. In marketing terms, this means buying your ideal customer with the resources you already have. A sound marketing plan should mention exactly how much you are willing to spend to acquire your ideal customer.

A sound marketing plan should adhere to balance, and it is also important to show risks are being acknowledged. Like a business plan, a marketing plan is a vital guide. There are many entrepreneurs who do not understand the value of a marketing plan, and still others are clueless as to exactly what a marketing plan is. Every start-up venture and existing business needs a business plan, yet many entrepreneurs choose to forgo with that hence they throw away possible success. A marketing plan is required if you want your business to become a household name. Your marketing plan provides structure to the marketing efforts of your business.

23 Top Tips For Entrepreneurs From Entrepreneurs

October 9th, 2009

The very essence of an entrepreneur dictates that you have plenty of tenacity and spirit and many people believe that entrepreneurs are born, rather than made. However, each one of us needs to hone a really wide array of skills and we sometimes need to refocus to ensure that we are always moving forward and in a constant mode of development. From my daily discussions with my clients as an accountant, I have been able to summaries some of the advice they have when it comes top running a successful business.

  1. Always identify the need. Successful entrepreneurs provide goods or services to a hungry market. Don’t make the mistake of coming up with an idea and then trying to see whether it will sell, or not. Analyze the need first.
  2. Apply the KISS principle. Try to keep it simple, as much as you can. If you have too many loops in your sales process, or require the interaction of too many parties to make it all work, you face an uphill battle.
  3. Redefine the work ethic. If you are just setting out as an entrepreneur, you may have thought that you needed to work hard in your previous occupation. Get ready to reinterpret your meaning of hard work!
  4. You, Inc. Essentially, as an entrepreneur, it’s all about you. While you may have a branded product or service, go out of your way to project you as the expert and the valuable cog in the wheel.
  5. Analysis – paralysis. It can be very easy to fall into the trap of constant research and a loop of information gathering. There’s a time and place for this essential element, of course but you must always feel as if you’re placing one foot in front of the other and not hanging in midair.
  6. Surround yourself with excellence. Many experts suggest that you take on the characteristics, ethics and approach of those who you interact with. Try to surround yourself with positive and productive people who have something to contribute to your overall good.
  7. Watch the clock. Time management is a fundamental consideration. Don’t get hung up with analysis, but do make sure that you produce a comprehensive and workable time management plan for your daily and weekly activities.
  8. Just do it. Discipline is everything and never put off until tomorrow what you know should be done today. Over a period of time, this kind of behavior will evolve into a lack of productivity.
  9. Don’t reinvent the wheel. You may have a very novel and exciting concept and expect it to sell like hot cakes. That doesn’t mean that you have to reinvent all the sales, marketing, operational and backup machines that will be necessary to bring your baby to market.
  10. Be like a rhinoceros. You will need thick skin and must be able to brush off any rejections, any negative reactions or naysayers. This is not to say that you should ignore any constructive criticism, or that you should ignore disgruntled customers, but you must be able to bounce back right away.
  11. Be frugal. When things start going well, remember how much of a struggle it may have been in the past. Always maintain a frugal approach and run your business as if every penny counts.
  12. It’s a state of mind. Youroutlook and approach will dictate your ultimate success. Believe!
  13. Have an appetite. Always be hungry and driven and not “fat and happy.” You must be constantly striving to get to the next level.
  14. Social buzz. If you don’t understand the importance of social networking to your business yet, get on board as quickly as you can. This is a train that has already left the station and you had better jump onto it as soon as you can.
  15. Get a mentor. Seek out someone who has been successful in your niche of operations. If you can develop a personal relationship, all the better. At the least, try and sign up for his or her books, seminars or e-mail newsletters.
  16. Nerves of steel. Becoming a successful entrepreneur requires you to be a lover of roller coasters. If you like those white knuckle rides, be prepared.
  17. SWOT. Take an honest look at yourself and your operations. Can you determine what your strengths and opportunities are? Perhaps even more important, what are your weaknesses and can you envision your threats.
  18. Don’t stand still. Entrepreneurialism is a constant process of evolution. Be always looking for the next opportunity and how you can improve your breed.
  19. Horses for courses. While an entrepreneur must often be the master of all, it only makes sense to allocate some of the complex and important professional elements to appropriate people – accountants, attorneys and other advisers.
  20. Never take off the training wheels. There is no such thing as too much education, so try and fit in seminars or other training courses into your active schedule. These are good investments in your future.
  21. Everything is negotiable. Being in business requires you to be flexible. They say that everything is for sale for the right price and in business, everything is negotiable as you try and achieve a win-win situation.
  22. Shout it from the rooftops. Self promote at all times. Have your own elevator pitch ready and be able to indicate and inform about you, your products and your services.
  23. Believe. With self-confidence and a strong sense of self belief, you can go to the moon.

What are your tips? I would love to hear them.

Article Marketing

June 3rd, 2009

Are you a website owner who has been looking for ways to increase your website traffic? If so, you are definitely not alone.  Each year, millions of website owners wonder why their website didn’t see more traffic.  Instead of wondering, you are urged to take action. After all, there are a number of different ways that you can go about increasing the traffic that your website sees. The good news is that a number of these ways,
which include article distribution, are relatively easy to implement.  Despite being easy to implement, the rewards may be immeasurable.

Article distribution is an internet marketing technique that is used by many webmasters. Despite being a relativity popularity marketing tactic, there are still many webmasters who are unfamiliar with article distribution. If you are one of those business owners, you will want to read on.  Taking the time to familiarize yourself with article distribution could be your best minutes ever put to use.

Article distribution involves the use of websites that are known as article directories. Article directories are websites that host a large collection of articles.  To make finding and reading those articles easier, most article directories place each of their articles into categories.  Popular categories include education, business, automobiles, and travel.  In each article, the writer is able to create a link to one of their
websites.  That link is often accompanied by background information on the website in question or the webmaster. Each time one of your links is clicked, internet users will be directed to your website.  This connection will increase the amount of traffic your website sees and it may also help to increase the amount of profit it generates.

Although article distribution is a nice and easy way to generate website traffic, it is one that needs to be handled properly.  If not handled correctly, you may essentially end up wasting your time.  The first step in using article directories to your advantage is focusing on a topic that you would like to write about.  For the best success, you will want to write on a topic or an issue that is, in one way or another, related to the
website readers will be directed to.  Any article may increase the traffic that your website sees, but if you rely on internet sales, you will need to go a step further.  For instance, if you are selling a service, such as an answering service, you may want your article to focus on the benefits of using an answering service.

Once you have determine what the main topic or focus of your articles will be, you will then need to examine how you will write them.  If you find yourself having a difficult time figuring out what to write, you may want to think about creating yourself an outline.  An outline will act as a guide for you. An outline will not only help you know what to write, but it will also help to ensure that you do not leave out any important
information.

Once you have created yourself an outline, you can begin to start writing. When doing so, it is important that you keep your content interesting and easy to read.  Be cautious of using technical words that many internet users will not understand.  Although your first thought may be to create informational articles, you want to be cautious of providing too much information.  You need your readers to click on your links, to
get to your website.  If your article is too informative, they may already have found what they needed, thus the needed for visiting your website may have been eliminated.  You will want to leave your readers wanting more information.

After your article has been compiled and thoroughly proofread, you will want to submit it to the article directories of your choice.  Although you might assume that your job is done after this point, it isn’t or at least it shouldn’t be. Article distribution is a great way to generate traffic, but it needs to be done on occasion. In fact, article distribution should be done on a regular basis. You may want to set a goal for yourself, like submitting at least five articles a month or even more.  This will help to ensure that your readers are always given new, updated information to read and absorb.  In fact, the more articles you distribute the more links you will create.
