Five Tips To Using Your Business Plan.

November 27th, 2009

It takes guts to defy chaos and predict the future of your business, and yet that’s precisely what an entrepreneur does when writing a business plan. Considering it’s a written roadmap that can be used at any point in the future to measure whether the business succeeded or failed, most people will put it off as long as they can. Of course, most people don’t own businesses either. But those who develop business plans quickly come to realize an abundance of benefits.

The most important reason to do a business plan is to gain understanding about, and create a blueprint for starting or growing a business. Once the plan is done it can easily be adapted to communicate with different audiences.
Here are 5 different ways to reconfigure your business plan, from longest to shortest.

1. The Complete Business Plan. Your full business plan will include an executive summary, the narrative and financial components, and a number of supporting documents. By adding well-crafted, personalized cover letters for each contact, you will be able to use your business plan to communicate with potential partners, grant fund managers, bankers and other debt financing agencies.
2. The Investors Business Plan. Right up front, investors will want to know your pitch; what problem your business solves, what value you place on your business, how much money you need, and what are you are offering in return. They will also need to know whether you are seeking debt or equity financing, the expected return on the investment, how you plan to deal with the risks, and what your exit strategy is. Most importantly, investors will want to know all about you, the owner.
3. The Employees Business Plan. The scope of the business plan you present for employees will be guided by your philosophy on how much employees should know about the inner workings of your business. For example, you might use the narrative portion of the business plan plus the sales forecast, but exclude the historical and current financials and supporting documentation. The main benefit of sharing relevant parts of your business plan with employees is to have all members of your team on the same page.
4. The Business Plan Brief. Also known as an executive summary, this 1 to 2 page version can be used to introduce your business to various audiences. It can be added to presentations and proposals, or hung on the office wall to serve as visible reminder of the corporate direction. The brief can include things like the business vision, the mission statement, the strategic and marketing goals, sales, and profit targets. It provides most of the content needed to build a business website or to design flyers, brochures, prospectuses and other marketing materials.
5. The Elevator Pitch. An elevator pitch is a brief introduction to your business. The term is often used in the context of an entrepreneur pitching a business idea to someone during the time it takes for an average elevator ride. It might be as long as thirty seconds or 100 words.

Those who do step up and develop a business plan will usually discover that it’s not quite as formidable as it seems at first. Business planning can be a lot of fun, and whatever else can be said, it’s a remarkable confidence builder and an amazing learning experience for those who go for it.

Don’t Forget To Ping Your Blog To Get Fast Traffic

Blogs are essential to running any online business. The key benefit is that it allows you to stay up-to-date with your audience. It also allows your audience to check in on your website for new updates so it’s a win-win for everyone. If you do have a blog, it’s important to write daily posts so that the search engines can increase your site ranking. Updated content is heaven for the search engines. It also helps improve your websites traffic quicker. But is adding content the only way to improve your traffic! Not at all! The best rule of thumb when you have a blog is to ping. Pinging is very easy!

Basically, when you set up your blog, you’re going to get a thing called an RSS feed. It’s a really simple syndication feed. This feed is going to be kind of like the channel. Think about it this way… Your blog is a radio station and in order for somebody to get everything on that radio station, they’ve got to turn to a channel. So those channel represents your RSS feed. So, basically for anybody that’s logged-in or tuned in to that channel or shall I say that feed they’re going to be getting that information. If they subscribe to your feed then they are automatically updated with a feed notification of your newest blog entry. That’s what an RSS feed is.

Then next step after you’ve added a new blog entry is to send out a ping. You basically want to ping your blog to let the search engines know that you’ve updated it by adding new content. Basically it’s like you’re saying: “Hey, listen, I have new updated content on my page. Come check me out.” Pinging gives you a head start instead of you having to wait for the search engines to come around and realize you’ve added new content. You’re basically giving them a heads up beforehand by saying: “Hey, come check me out” with your ping.

So, how do you ping your blog? Well, you ping your blog by going to a blog pinging website. I use them and swear by them. All you have to do is get your RSS feed from your site. And then just take your link and then submit it and you’re good to go.

This is how it’s set up: It’s going to say, “What’s your website’s name or title?” You’re going to take the name of the website or the title and put it on there. You’re going to put your URL. You’re also going to select the category of niche that you’re in and then just push the button to send your ping. Just push “Ping my site” and then it’ll start pinging out to Yahoo, Google, blog people and every site that needs to be notified.

It’s going to go ping about 1,000 or so different locations to let them know that you’ve updated your content. (If you’re using WordPress, I think there’s also a built-in pinger where it actually does that for you so you don’t even have to do it). But use Pingler for best results and then you’re done. That’s all you’ve got to do.

The Marketing Plan

October 26th, 2009

There are some things that should be avoided when putting together your marketing plan. Keep in mind that a good marketing plan is a collaboration of good strategy and tactics, and you cannot do either one effectively without the other.

In formulating a sound marketing plan here are some things that you should at all cost avoid:

  1. Relying too much on creativity – I am not saying that being creative is wrong, it is actually okay. However as an aspiring entrepreneur you should not rely too much on this aspect. Sometimes when we write our marketing plan we see too much creativity that we tend to overlook tactics which will of course hurt the business in the long run.
  2. Not paying attention to numbers – business in general is all about math and math is about numbers. So in short your marketing plan has something to do with numbers as well as it is part of your business. If you do not know your numbers that well then rest assured the results will not be good. Creating any marketing plan without knowing how much it will cost to acquire your customer, what your average sale needs to be, what is the required profit margin will result to failure. If you are going to invest $500 on advertising alone, how many leads and sales will you have to make in order to cover for the cost of the ad and at the same time profit?
  3. Filling your marketing plan with unnecessary stuff – of course unnecessary stuff will just confuse you, so let it go. Generalities are also qualified as “unnecessary stuff.” Stating that your target market is “everybody” or “adults 50- and above” is not explicit enough and will result to problems down the road. Instead of doing this, start thinking of a niche. Narrow it down to “young males 16-plus who play video games and ride skateboards,” instead of stating “everybody.” While writing your marketing plan, keep in mind that marketing is all about buying your customers. Imagine going into a supermarket and buying everything that your heart desires. The question is, “Can you buy everything you see?” Let us face the harsh reality that, your resources would never allow it. In marketing terms, this means buying your ideal customer with the resources you already have. A sound marketing plan should mention exactly how much you are willing to spend to acquire your ideal customer.

A sound marketing plan should adhere to balance, and it is also important to show risks are being acknowledged. Like a business plan, a marketing plan is a vital guide. There are many entrepreneurs who do not understand the value of a marketing plan, and still others are clueless as to exactly what a marketing plan is. Every start-up venture and existing business needs a business plan, yet many entrepreneurs choose to forgo with that hence they throw away possible success. A marketing plan is required if you want your business to become a household name. Your marketing plan provides structure to the marketing efforts of your business.

7 Tips for Becoming a More Focused and Productive Entrepreneur

October 13th, 2009

I have a number of friends who had the entrepreneurial spirit, but did not have the entrepreneur determination and drive to stay focused and be productive enough to maintain a business. Here are a set of tips that I recommend you follow if you want to be a successful entrepreneur.

1. Stop Browsing the Internet Aimlessly!

The beauty of the internet and technology is that we can find anything in the world we want, whenever we want. This is great when we need to get information in a hurry to pitch an offer or close a sale. We need to know what our competitors are doing. However, it is very easy to be sucked into the wireless web and get lost for hours.

The fact remains that Internet marketing does require time online. This time needs to be used for checking out the competition and looking for ways to not only build your online business but improve the efficiency of your business. This should include networking on different sites that pertain to your business model. Responding to posts on blogs and forums that are related to your niche and or product. I easily spend a good hour or two doing this each day.

2. Invest in Time-Saving Tools and Resources

You are in business for yourself. Which means the success of your business depends completely on your work ethic and skills. This doesn’t mean that you have to do everything yourself. The key to productivity is to use tools that are going to help you do the same work in half the time. There are a number of products on the market that will help you do parts of your job in half the time. Just to name a few – RoboForm, Article Marketer, and TicketDesk Pro are products and services I use everyday to help maintain and grow my online business, while saving me a significant amount of time. I use this extra time to work on other marketing aspects of my online business.

3. Create A Schedule and Stick To It

I don’t live and die by my schedule but I do keep one because it helps me stay on track. My schedule may not be the most ideal schedule for you, so take a moment or two and create one that is going to meet your lifestyle and fulfill your business requirements. If your work day doesn’t start until 3pm and lasts until 10pm you need to make sure those 7 hours are productive. Make a “To Do List” for your day.

4. Outsource As Much As You Can

Believe it or not there are a lot of people out there that will help you do your job more efficiently than what you can do yourself. This is where outsourcing comes into play. If you need content for your site or product, instead of spending the time writing the article yourself, outsource to a writer.

5. Joint Venture with a Trusted Person

This could be one of the most lucrative tips out there. I say this because you have to know that while you may be good at one aspect of your business there are other aspects that you could use help. Consider undertaking a joint venture, but just make sure you can trust the person you are partnering with. For example, if I wanted to take my knowledge of Internet marketing and create an eCourse, I may enter into a joint venture with a writer who can put together a killer eCourse using my extensive knowledge and we would share the profit.

6. Break the Email Habit

Do what I do, check your email once in the morning and once at the end of the day. Email is a wonderful luxury and a necessary evil. Marketing requires you to be available to your marketing world 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This does not mean that you spend 7 hours going through your email. It isn’t going anywhere, and if there is something that is earth shatteringly urgent you may get a phone call. Most emails can wait a few hours to respond to.

7. Automate as Much as You Can

Take advantages of pinging services, RSS feeds, autoresponders and email providers that combine multiple accounts such as Google or Outlook so that you are still sending out updates, checking emails and taking care of other menial tasks that need to be handled, but can be done through an automated service. This gives you time to tackle other projects.

I cannot make you more productive. I can only provide you with tools and tips that will help you take your business to the next level. If you decide to step up to the plate and use the seven tips I have provided, you will find that you will be more productive and your business will be more lucrative. To end it with a quote:

Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort. Paul J. Meyer

Article Writing Secrets & Strategies

October 7th, 2009

Do you ever find yourself staring at a blank screen or a blank sheet of paper when you’re supposed to be writing articles for your blog, for your ezine or newsletter and for article submission so you can promote your books, products or services?

How would you like to find ways to tap into a limitless supply of article ideas?

Yes, our imaginations run thin every now and then, and no, it isn’t easy to come up with article ideas sometimes. But, I promise you that there are ways to tap into a limitless supply of article ideas. No matter what your expertise lies in, you can always generate new and interesting ideas for articles IF you follow these guidelines…

5 Ways to Never Run Out of Article Ideas

1) Get inspiration from magazines covers.

Find a magazine that is as close as you can get to your niche and look at the titles on the magazine cover. Look at the titles that jump out at you and make you say, “That looks like it would be a good articleâI want to read that!”

Many times you can bounce an article off of a title you see on a magazine cover. Can you convert that title to apply to something in your specific niche?

Now, notice I’m saying, “find a magazine that is somewhat in your niche.” Many of us have websites that are in niches that do not have their own magazines. For example, there is no magazine that I know of about Article Marketing.

But I stay a short distance from my specific niche and look in related niches, such as Writing, Creativity, Productivity, and possibly even SEO. These are all issues that lie at the heart of article marketing, so they work as inspiration launching pads.

2) Don’t forget about the newbies.

When we’re writing on our area of expertise, sometimes we can overlook the obvious. We want to write helpful, educational articles, and our minds quite often go to topics that are more advanced.

Have you ever considered that someone reading your article might not even understand the basics of what you’re talking about?

I have to remind myself of this all the timeânot everyone knows what article marketing is, and not everyone even knows the reasons why it’s a popular online marketing tool.

Could the same thing be true in your niche?

Think about itâalthough our articles are not sales oriented or promotional in any way, when we educate our readers on some aspect of our niche, we are increasing the likelihood that they will one day be our customers.

So, don’t forget about the newbies who are in your target market but aren’t knowledgeable about what you do. Try to think back to questions you had when you were first starting out. Think about what confused you. Think about the very basic things that you wish someone had explained to you before you became the expert.

3) Think about: “What are the 10 questions that my customers (or potential customers) most frequently ask me?”

Write those questions down and address each one of them in a separate article.

By completing this writing exercise, you’re letting your target market tell you what to write about. This makes perfect sense since you’re trying to appeal to them anyway.

4) Use template titles and fill in the blanks.

Here are some of mine:

- 10 Great Reasons Why ____

- How To ____ in 7 Easy Steps

- 3 Secret Tricks For _____

- How To Conquer ______

- The Top 10 Mistakes People Make When ____

- Reader Question: “[insert question here]”

You may notice that these titles are all List articles (any article that has a 1,2,3 etc list in it), How-To articles, and Question articles (articles that answer a question that is stated in the title).

These are my go-to article topic stimulators. Just seeing the format for the title gets the wheels of my brain moving (which helps creativity!)

Try filling in the blanks for the template titles listed above, and I bet you can come up with a compelling title to base a new article on.

5) Use Article Writing Templates

Here are some of the article-writing templates that will help you…

- Myth Buster

- Top 10…

- How-To…

- Quiz

- Failure to Success

- Timeline

- 7 Things You Need

- What’s Hot, What’s Not

- 3 Stages

- Problem/Solution

- Plus many, many more

By following the five strategies above, you will:

- Gain the confidence to write articles whenever you want

- Banish writer’s block forever

- Remove all the frustration out of writing articles

- Develop ALL THE CONTENT you will ever need for your website, for your blog, for your newsletter and for article submission
